Home runs without strikeouts: Pujols truly in a class by himself

Albert Pujols' 2009 season deserved to be examined in many ways.  He had 47 home runs and 64 strikeouts.  To put this in perspective, there were 22 players with at least 32 home runs, and only 2 had less than 100 strikeouts.  The other player? Aaron Hill with 36 home runs and 98 strikeouts.  It actually was not as good as his 2006 season (49 HR, 50 SO), but he is the only player even remotely on this level right now.

All-Time: 47+ HR, less than 64 SO

1900-1955

Ralph Kiner (1949)

Willie Mays (1955)

Johnny Mize (1947)

Ted Kluszewski (1954-55)

Lou Gehrig (1934, 1936)

Babe Ruth (1930)

1955-2009

Hank Aaron (1971)

Albert Pujols (2006, 2009)

Among all active players, there are only three instances of a player having 45 HR and less than 70 SO:

Albert Pujols - 2004

Albert Pujols - 2006

Albert Pujols - 2009

I think Kluszewski's two year run was the most impressive because of the era he did it in. Pujols is a beast and one of the best hitters ever, but he has some built-in advantages like a lowered mound, tiny ballparks, and more teams (less quality pitchers).

Klu also was robbed for the 1954 MVP.

For a player I'd never heard of before, he's damn good.
