MLE's Strike Again

Doing some digging around for something I'm working on, something caught my attention and is begging to be posted here. Just beggin', I tell ya!

Before we get to it, there is a definition that is essential to this post. The idea of MLE's, or Major League Equivalencies. This formula takes minors league stats, and converts them to how the player will perform in the majors. It factors in minor league level, and what league they play in on that level.

Below are some very simple numbers, that will shock and awe you from Clay Buchholz.

2009 AAA: 7.85 K/9, 2.65 BB/9

AAA MLE: 6.68 K/9, 3.61 BB/9

2009 MLB: 6.65 K/9, 3.52 BB/9

It's not perfect, but it's damn close.

All stats from MinorLeagueSplits.com

I'm embarrassed to have never heard of MLEs before. Pretty cool stuff. I was looking at it for what Coghlan did last year in his 98 at-bats at the minors. I wish there was an easier way to compare MLEs across all players though. Also, do you know if you there's a way to look back on veterans or even Hall of Fame players in the minors and getting MLEs?

Minor League Splits has a MLE Batting calculator (http://www.minorleaguesplits.com/mlecalc.html) you can plug data into.

I believe the formula changes every year, due to league and park factors, so old data may not fit well into the equation. Some of the more recent callups are in the system (Ryan Braun is, not sure exactly how far it goes back), and they have the MLE's from each year in there.

If you're having any problems with it, just shoot me a quick email and we can discuss further.
