Morning Notes: Brewers, Rangers, Washburn, Johnson

  • Adam McCalvy reports that the Brewers do not expect to come to terms with any of their free agents by tonight's midnight exclusive negotiation deadline. Starting Friday, free agency begins. Of note, Mike Cameron, Craig Counsell, Felipe Lopez and Jason Kendall will hit the free agent market. The Brewers have limited money to spend on starting pitching, so Braden Looper will likely be back at some point with a cheap deal. Lopez is an interesting player, who should garner interest from most teams with an infield vacancy.
  • Texas Rangers owner Tom Hicks is trying to keep the team under his control, getting together a team of bidders. While he technically still owns the team, my understanding is that he has so much debt he needs to sell the team, even if it's to himself. It's strange, but it is Texas.
  • Jim Street does not believe Jarrod Washburn will be back with the Mariners even though rumors suggest he is considering it. In my mind, and Street's, Washburn will end up in either Minnesota or Milwaukee, so he can be close to his home. Even though he had success in Seattle, they should know when to cut ties. While the defense can make pitchers look better, it is better served when it makes a good pitcher look great, rather than an average pitcher look good.
  • Geoff Baker reports that M's catcher Rob Johnson only needed three surgeries this offseason. Johnson had procedures to fix both of his hips and his wrist. While he believes he can be ready for spring training, Seattle has said they would like to bring in a veteran catcher to pair with Adam Moore just in case Johnson isn't ready to go.
