It only makes sense that we make our return with a giant notes post this morning. Getting everything that has flown under the radar or is still relevant out there today:
- Todd Zolecki reports that Brett Myers will not be back with the Phillies in 2010, and Matt Stairs won't be back unless he accepts a minor league deal. I understand the Stairs situation, but isn't it worth it to try to bring Myers back on a short deal worth a couple million? When he's healthy, he's a solid piece n the rotation and in the bullpen. Someone will get good value here, and wouldn't be surprised if it's the Red Sox or Brewers.
- David O'Brien lays out the vast number of decisions the Braves will have to make soon. For a team that isn't going to spend much money, the Braves will have quite the wishlist this winter.
- Kevin Seefried lays ou this offseason plan for the Yankees, which includes letting Chien-Ming Wang and Hideki Matsui walk away via free agency, trading for Adam Dunn, and signing Ben Sheets to a one-year deal worth $8 million. Wang is another starter who has great value as a free agent if the team is patient enough to let him get healthy before returning to the mound. This is assuming the reason he was sub-par last season was because of his injuries, of course.
- John Fay believes that the Reds shouldn't deal Brandon Phillips or Bronson Arroyo, as the rumors suggests they are considering. I'm on board with keeping Phillips, but Arroyo's great second half makes him a nice sell-high candidate.
- The Red Sox have talked with John Lackey this offseason, but Nick Cafardo says might just be "doing their due diligence." I, on the other hand, am fairly confident the Red Sox will be very involved with the bidding for Lackey's services. Adding another quality pitcher to their rotation, along with a bat in left field should be their top priority this offseason.
- Nick Piecoro wouldn't be surprised if Livan Hernandez returns to Arizona as the team's #5 starter. I looked at this option at BDD this past weekend, so you can go there if you want a "Livan Hernandez is fat" joke.
- After his short (and by short, I mean almost non-existant) stint with the Diamondbacks earlier this decade, Wally Backman is going to manage the Mets' Single-A affiliate in Brooklyn. He managed in the minors after he was let go by Arizona, but has been in the independent league as of late.
