According to Jordan Bastian of MLB.com, the Toronto Blue Jays are interested in signing Yorvit Torrealba:
Torrealba's agent, Melvin Roman, confirmed on Tuesday that Toronto has reached out to him on more than one occasion to discuss the catcher's future, but he declined further comment. Beyond the Blue Jays, Torreabla has suitors in the Rockies and Giants, with two or three other teams expressing some level of interest.
"They did call. They have called a few times already," said Roman, referring to the Blue Jays. "We have spoken about the possibilities with Toronto. They did call and ask about Torrealba."
As Bastian notes, the Blue Jays catcher last year was Rod Barajas, who is now a free agent. Let's compare the two, shall we?
Barajas: .226/.258/.403, 19 HR, .282 wOBA, 14.2 LD%, 0.8 WAR (7.6 RAR) Torrealba: .291/.351/.380, 2 HR, .316 wOBA, 22.5 LD%, 0.8 WAR (8.2 RAR)
Barajas has an awful career average and OBP, but brings power to the table. Torrealba's career high in HR is 8, so you can see the type of hitter that Yorvit is. While it is hard to quantify catcher defense, I've always heard that Barajas is well respected, as is Torrealba.
The Blue Jays want a catcher, that much is certain. They were rumored to be going after Chris Snyder earlier this offseason, but seem more likely to just find a stopgap in the free agent market. While Torrealba is nothing special, he probably isn't going to hurt you either.
